At Downtown Psychological Services, we work with people from a wide-range of backgrounds with varying needs and goals. We provide individual therapy, couples counseling and group therapy.
We are often asked what "type" of therapy we offer. The simple answer is every therapist who works with Downtown Psychological Services (DPS) is warm, knowledgeable, and experienced.
Our therapists often have several thousand hours of combined training and clinical experience in evidence-based approaches including Psychoanalysis, Somatic Experiencing, Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples, Cognitive Behavioral Techniques, Mindfulness Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Therapists at DPS have worked in a variety of healthcare settings such as emergency rooms, substance abuse treatment facilities, college counseling centers, and with crisis response teams. This breadth of training extends and deepens each therapist's expertise.
As social workers, psychologists and mental health therapists, we are focused on a social justice orientation. They strive to cultivate and encourage empathy, compassion and understanding for self and for others. This to be especially important for those who experience oppression, marginalization, and discrimination. Our therapists aim to encourage and facilitate critical thinking and challenge current beliefs, thoughts and behaviors that oppose social justice values and maintain social inequities. The goal is to encourage growth in these areas amongst ourselves and our clients.
